A Journey of Dedication
De-Young International School began its remarkable journey on January 10, 1988, when Mr. B.J. Onyemah, imbued with a vision of enlightened futures, opened its doors to a single room filled with boundless potential. With just three dedicated staff members and four eager students, the journey was humble yet filled with ambition. From its inception, the school’s motto “EDUCATION IS POWER” reflected a deep commitment to nurturing young minds that would ultimately contribute positively to society and the nation.
In 1992, the Lagos State Ministry of Education endorsed the school’s efforts, prompting an important transition. The name evolved from “DE-YOUNG INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL” to “DE-YOUNG NURSERY & BASIC SCHOOL,” and with this change came a powerful new motto: “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.” Despite the challenges that lay ahead, including resistance from competing institutions, the spirit of perseverance shone through as the management relocated the school to Olu-Odo Village. Under the leadership of Mr. Edward Cudjo, the school continued to grow, even amidst logistical challenges posed by poor road conditions.
With an unwavering passion for shaping future leaders, the school found a new home at No. 1 Muyibi Ipaye Street, Aga, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Here, students underwent rigorous academic, physical, and moral training. Their hard work bore fruit as they consistently achieved exceptional results, gained admission into prestigious Federal Government Colleges, and triumphed in various local and state competitions. Recognized by the Lagos State Ministry of Education as an “A” school, the institution flourished, compelling parents to share their positive experiences throughout the community.
Today, the school proudly stands with over three hundred students and more than thirty dedicated staff members in its permanent location at No. 22 Oluwakemi Street, Off Ikorodu Club Road, Aga, Ikorodu, Lagos State. This growth is not just a number but a testament to the love, care, and relentless effort that the staff has poured into the institution.
Recognizing the importance of providing a continuous educational journey, the administration took a groundbreaking step in 2006 by establishing De-Young Secondary School, renamed De-Young International College. With a new motto “STAND FIRM IN GOD” the college opened doors on September 16, 2006. Guided by their faith and commitment, the staff of twelve embarked on a journey to form a nurturing environment for their students.
Mr. T. Odumbo, as the Acting Principal after Mr. Gabriel, led initiatives to raise awareness about the institution, resulting in a significant increase in student enrollment from fifty to over two hundred. This growth is a powerful reminder of how belief in a vision, combined with collective effort, consistently brings about success.
At De-Young Comprehensive College, students are not just prepared academically but also developed holistically. They engage in a variety of extracurricular activities that foster growth beyond classroom walls. From competitions like Cowbell Mathematics and Spelling Bee to achievements in sports like the Deputy Head Boy winning a gold medal with the Lagos State volleyball team these experiences shape well-rounded individuals ready to face the world.
The spirit of determination and hard work is evident in the names of our alumni who now thrive in esteemed institutions of higher learning, such as Alokolaro Esther and Okusanya Olamide, studying Medicine in Russia and the USA, respectively. These success stories ignite hope and inspire us to continue the journey.
Reflecting on our past, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have dedicated years of service to our mission. Notably, Mr. Cudjo, Mr. Mochiah, and Mr. Duru M.C., along with other committed staff, embody the spirit of selfless service that fuels our collective success.
